The Panoramaweg in Baden-Baden might not have glaciers or high passes, but what it offers instead is pure variety: pine forests that smell like resin and rain, castle ruins on rocky ridges, vineyards that glow golden in the evening sun, and elegant views over the spa town below.
Stretching about 45 kilometers, this circular trail wraps around Baden-Baden in Germany's northern Black Forest. It's perfectly designed for a 4-day trip. We walked it in mid-October, when the leaves were turning pretty shades of amber. Here's what those four days looked like for us: steady climbs, small encounters, and the kind of peaceful beauty that grows on you one step at a time.
The hike begins right in the heart of Baden-Baden, at the Kurhaus, where cute cafe's meet forested slopes. Within minutes, the city fades behind you and the path climbs into tall pines toward the Battert Cliffs - sandstone towers rising above the Rhine Valley.
We stopped at a rocky lookout just below the cliffs. A short detour led us to the Altes Schloss Hohenbaden, a 12th-century castle whose towers look out across Baden-Baden and far into the Rhine plain.
The path then descended gently through oak and beech forest toward Ebersteinburg, a quiet village where we paused for coffee and plum cake before continuing to the Merkur cable car valley station.

This stage was a full immersion into the Black Forest. The path climbed steadily from the cable car station toward Merkur Mountain (668 m), one of Baden-Baden's best viewpoints. We took the cable car up to the summit and climbed the tower - from above, the route curved through an endless sea of green ridges.
The descent wound down shaded forest trails toward the Gaisbach Valley, a peaceful corridor lined with ferns and mossy stones. Near the end, we followed the sound of running water to reach the Forellenhof, a traditional inn surrounded by trout ponds.
It felt like a hidden world: wooden balconies, quiet meadows, and the smell of wood smoke drifting through the evening air. We had dinner right there - fresh trout and a glass of Riesling - before falling asleep to the sound of the stream outside.

Day three was gentler, filled with the soft rhythm of forest paths and water sounds. The route followed a narrow valley, weaving through beech woods and small clearings until it reached the Geroldsauer Wasserfall, a picturesque waterfall hidden among ferns.
We lingered there for a while, the air cool and fresh from the spray. A small café nearby served apple cake and coffee - the perfect mid-morning pause. From there, a gradual climb led us toward Geroldsauer Mühle, a beautifully restored mill that now houses a restaurant and guesthouse.
We arrived by mid-afternoon, early enough to sit outside with a beer and watch the light shift through the trees. This was the most relaxing stage - short, peaceful, and full of those small Black Forest details: wooden bridges, damp moss, and the rustle of leaves.

Our final day began in a veil of fog, the forest quiet and cool. Soon the trees opened into vineyards around Neuweier, where the scent of ripening grapes filled the air. Above the village stood Yburg Castle, a hilltop ruin with a commanding view across the Rhine Valley - the perfect spot for a final lunch.
From there, the trail wound gently through meadows and orchards toward Schloss Favorite, a pastel summer palace surrounded by parkland. The last stretch led us back to Baden-Baden, the city's spires reappearing through the trees.
We finished where we'd started - at the edge of the old town - and spent the afternoon soaking in the thermal pools of Caracalla Therme, the best kind of ending after four days on foot.
That evening, a short train ride carried us back toward Karlsruhe, the forest fading behind us like a soft green memory.

The Panoramaweg is all about harmony - a trail that moves effortlessly between nature and culture, forest and vineyard. You're never far from a village, a meal, or a glass of wine, yet the silence of the woods feels endless.
Each day brought a different rhythm: cliffs and castles, waterfalls and wine hills, all tied together by the gentle spirit of the Black Forest. It's the kind of hike that doesn't demand speed - just curiosity and good shoes.
And just like that, four days later, we were back on the train - clean boots, happy legs, and that peaceful satisfaction that comes only from being out in nature.
